TAR AND GRAVEL ROOF REPAIR
Tar and gravel are used as roofing materials for flat roofs. You can’t place shingles on the flat roof because shingles can’t protect the roof from rain if they are not placed at an angle. Tar and gravel roof is so called built-up roof; it is made of tar paper and tar and covered with gravel. This type of roof can last from 10 to 20 years. The most common problem with this roof is water leakage. If you find stains on the walls or ceilings, it is time for tar and gravel roof repair.
First thing you have to do is to find the leak. Sometimes it can be hard; the leakage is very often far from the spot on the ceiling. Water travels through the layers of the roof and starts to seep when it finds weak spot in the roof structure. Inspect the entire roof surface; start at the lowest point of the roof. Most probably, you will find ponding water in that area. Remove the gravel from a surface of 100 square foot and soak the water using clothes. Clean thoroughly roof surface and remove the dirt. Look for blister and cracks in the tar. Cut the blister with utility knife making X section but do not damage underlayment. Open the cut flaps, soak the water underneath and dry thoroughly. Apply thick layer of tar and place back the flaps. Press them firmly. Put another layer of the tar over it; this layer should be at least 6 inches larger than repaired area.
Cut a piece of fabric. It has to be big enough to cover entire repaired area. Place the fabric in tar so that it gets saturated with the tar. Add thin layer of the tar all over the edges of the patch. Put back the gravel over the repaired area. Do it with your hands and not with the broom because that can disturb the patch. Gravel is used to protect the tar from the sunlight. Remember to wear protective gloves when working with tar.
This is quite simple work and you can easily do it yourself. But keep in mind that tar and gravel roof repair is always temporary solution.
It will last 3 to 6 months. After that time, another leak will appear, probably at the same place. In fact, when tar roof starts to leak, it usually means that you will have to replace it very soon. 3-6 months period gives you just enough time to explore all the available options.

TORCH DOWN ROOFING
Built-up tar and gravel roofing, torch down roofing and rubber membrane (EPDM) are three types of roofing the tlat roofs. Torch down roofing has been used for commercial roofing since 1970s and today is very popular for residential roofing. Torch down roofing uses base sheet and rubberized asphalt sheet, so called modified bitumen sheet. Fiberglass is used as base sheet. Flat or low slope roofs (less than 1 degree) must be watertight; otherwise ponding water will find the way and penetrate the house. Torch down roofing is slightly more expensive than tar and gravel roof but it protects your home better. This type of roofing lasts from 15 to 20 years, depending on number of layers you use. Two-layer roofing can last 10 – 15 years, while three-layer roofing lasts up to 20 years.
If there are already two layers of the material on the roof it is better to tear them off, but if there is just one pre-existing layer, you can place the new one over it. Inspect the roof carefully; surface should be smooth, clean and without blisters or cracks. Before you start to work, make sure you have everything you need – base sheet, modified bitumen sheet, nails, utility knife and, of course, hot flame torch. If you are planning to do torch down roofing only once, do not buy a torch because it is very expensive. You can rent it. This type of roofing is very demanding; careless or unprofessional handling can cause fire or serious injuries.
Begin with installing fiberglass base sheet. Place it on the roof surface and nail it down with cap nails. Control and secure the flashings around the edges. Apply primer; that will enable roofing material to adhere to the metal. Place the first row of the membrane at the low end of the roof. Overlap the edges of the roof for three inches. Unfold the membrane and smooth the wrinkles if there are any. Roll the membrane back a little and check whether it is tight and in good position. Place the torch about 12 inches in front of the membrane and move it in L-shaped motion. When the membrane gets shiny, push it with your foot so that it can bond with fiberglass base sheet. Use special tool to lift the end of the membrane and apply heath. Next sheet of membrane should overlap for six inches and next layer must overlap the bottom one for three inches.
Although torch down roofing is very durable and water resistant it requires extreme precaution when using hot flame torch. Consider hiring experienced professional to do the job.
Don’t underestimate what an important role your mattress plays in getting a good night’s sleep; a memory foam mattress can be the most important addition to a bed in order to get that well-deserved rest
Planning is Critical When Remodeling a Kitchen
The kitchen is the most often used room in the house, therefore remodelling will become the most all consuming renovation that the average homeowner will undertake. Before beginning, making a few plans can save on much heartache, frustration and help maintain a budget. The first thing to consider is who will do the remodel. A complete kitchen renovation takes a lot of skill in many areas. The many trades involved in a kitchen remodel include carpenters, plumbers, and electricians. A contractor will also do the planning and decision making. All this needs to be taken into consideration before making it a do it yourself project. Couples also need to consider the stress their relationship will be put under when taking it on together. If all of this is taken into consideration and it is still going to be a home done renovation, then planning will be the critical factor in a smooth renovation. Do many hours of reading over months. Ask questions on forums, read magazines for ideas and “how to” articles. Talk with family or friends that have already gone through the experience, learning from their mistakes. Ask about time as well, finding out how long it took remodel your own kitchen can be a major deterrent for some. Budget will be the first plan made. Without sticking to a budget the costs of a simple kitchen remodel can rise out of control, $10, 000 quickly turning into $75, 000 or higher. Setting a total budget for the whole project will help set the budget price on the many items to be purchased. This planning saves from sinking all available funds into just cabinets for example. Also, plan at least fifteen percent of the total budget to be spent on costs that can not be prepared for. Appliances and cabinets will take up the majority of the budget. They should also take up a fair amount of time planning. The colors and options are quite vast now, taking the time to plan exactly what kind of atmosphere the kitchen will create is a good question to consider. Time is a major factor as well. Most people find living without a kitchen is not feasible for a long period of time, especially if the home has children. The more planning that can be done before the project starts, is time well invested. Planning turns a hassle into a smooth kitchen renovation.
